Pre & Post Surgery Support

Pre and Post Surgery therapy is tailored to the requirements of the individual. Many individuals request manual lymphatic drainage to support their immune system and general wellness in preparing for surgery and to aid recovery, dealing with any post-surgical swelling as it arises. Some people may and have swelling and tissue fibrosis prior to surgery, particularly lipoenedama patients, and be under instruction from their surgeon to reduce this swelling and fibrosis prior to surgery. For these people often compression garments and Sequential Intermittent Pneumatic Compression (SIPC) therapy may also be recommended. Post surgery, for both lipoedema surgery and many other surgeries, there is often swelling that can also be supported with similar techniques. Some cancer surgeries involve lymph node removal, while many general surgeries cause scarring and tissue fibrosis which can all impact on the ability of the Lymphatic System to function optimally. Working to break down any fibrosis as it develops, wearing appropriate compression (if required) and manually draining Lymphatic Fluid can help to protect the tissues from overload during this recovery time which may improve long-term recovery and reduce the likelihood or severity of longer term swelling or lymphoedema. Post surgery after-care is often an important element in achieving the desired results in any cosmetic or plastic surgery.
As a Registered Nurse, the Lymphatic Nurse can also support with wound care, dressing changes and personal care needs as part of your appointment, where necessary. This may require a letter or phone call from your Doctor to ensure collaboration with your Treating Team and to maintain patient safety.
