Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

A gentle, specialised massage that stimulates lymph flow and movement around the body. This treatment supports detoxification, metabolism, immune health and can be used as a one-off relaxing treatment to support general health, or as a part of a management plan for underlying conditions affecting lymphatic health eg. lymphoedema, lipedema or post surgery swelling.

Manual Lymphatic Massage is a specialised gentle massage that targets the lymphatic system, stimulating lymph flow and movement around the body. Lymph fluid is directed to Lymph Nodes in a particular way, to support drainage and movement within the system. Our lymph fluid contains many white blood cells to support our immune system, and waste products that it carries away from our cells. When the Lymphatic System becomes sluggish, not only can it cause swelling within the body (oedema), but it can also compromise our immune system. Unlike the heart, the lymphatic system has no pump, so requires movement to initiate flow, for example in the form of specialised massage, exercise and certain breathing techniques. Long term, chronic swelling is known as Lymphoedema.
Many factors can affect the ability of the Lymphatic System to function optimally. Previous injuries including broken bones, medical treatments including surgery, cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation, and many diseases and conditions too. Some people are born with malfunctioning Lymphatic Systems through no fault of their own or their parents.
Manual Lymphatic massage can form an important part of treatment for Lymphoedema and oedema. It also supports general health and wellbeing and many healthy people choose this treatment as as part of their health maintenance journey. With it’s gentle touch, many people find it very relaxing – an enjoyable way to spend an hour whilst reaping the health benefits the massage offers.
